The Affiliate and Pilot Research Program provides an administrative mechanism by
which Principal Investigators in any discipline, and particularly those that
are not closely related to the Center's categorical Research Units, may have
full opportunity to use the Center's resources. This program serves as a
resource to the entire biomedical research community, including regional,
national and international researchers. The objectives of the program are to
provide resources (including Staff Scientist expertise) and facilities for
primate research to Principal Investigators who are not CNPRC Staff Scientists,
and to provide the expertise to Affiliates in all facets of the on-site portion
of primate research. The following is a sample of the research interests and
accomplishments of Affiliate Scientists:
- Lyme neuroborreliosis and the development of new vaccines for Lyme disease
- Relationship of cortical area signals to aspects of visual perception
- High fructose diets, obesity and adult-onset diabetes; leptin, the regulation of energy balance and weight loss maintenance
- Causes of strabismus and prevention of visual loss
- Somatosensory cortex and the thalmus
- Identify a pathogenic strain of H. pylori in nonhuman primates to study the determinants of infection, colonization and pathogenesis
- Islet transplantation using a novel technology to increase engraftment and vascularization of the islets in the host tissue.
- Novel treatments for diabetes
- Organ transplantation and immunosuppressive therapy
- Spinal cord treatment and repair
- Novel treatments for breast cancer
- Therapies for chronic colitis
